Putting a Stop to Serious Mistreatment

Creditor harassment is a major source of stress for people who have fallen behind on their debts. Many debt collectors put people on automatic dial, calling them several times a day with increasingly harsh demands. Some people even get debt collection calls at work.

Debt collection agencies frequently threaten debtors with severe consequences if they do not pay up, ranging from wage garnishment to arrest.

Many of these threats are exaggerated or just plain false. However, if you go long enough without paying your debts or filing bankruptcy on them, your creditors may end up suing you, and if their lawsuits are successful, they will then be able to garnish your wages.

Filing Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy puts what is called an "automatic stay" into place immediately. This makes it illegal for creditors and debt collectors to contact you.
